Norway Deploys Military to Protect Oil and Gas Infrastructure in Response to Nordstream Sabotage

Date:

Norway’s Prime Minister announced Wednesday that Norwegian militarY units will be deployed to its major oil and gas installations following suspected sabotage of NordStream I and II. Ekofisk, the oldest oil field in the Norwegian North Sea, contained approximately 129 million cubic metres of remaining recoverable reserves as of December 2012 making it the biggest oil field in Norway. The field is located 300km southwest of Stavanger in block 2/4 on the Norwegian Continental Shelf.

This comes at the same time as announcements made by the Swedish Security Service that they are taking over the preliminary investigation currently classified as sabotage by a foreign power. The Danish Energy Agency led by Director General Bottzauw announced that the gas leak could rise to more than 32% of his nations annual carbon emissions. He also said that more than half of the residual gas in both pipelines has already leaked with the entire volume to be leaked by Sunday due to the ongoing eruption.

Russian First Deputy Permanent Representative to the UN told press that a UN Security Council Meeting will be convened on September 30th in connection with incidents surrounding the explosions.
