Indonesian officials say that a 5.6 magnitude earthquake that hit the West Java on Monday has left at least 162 people dead with hundreds more reported injured, according to Provincial Governor Ridwan Kamil. An estimated 13,000 people have also been displaced by the quake, which damaged and destroyed hundreds of buildings.
Rescue teams are continuing efforts to locate survivors trapped under rubble, as well as recover bodies of the deceased.

Indonesia frequently experiences earthquakes due to its location on the “Ring of Fire,” which is a high seismic activity area made up of volcanos and tectonic fault lines. Damage and casualties caused by more powerful earthquakes are often due to poorly made structures not built to withstand seismic activity.
