Poland Summons Russian Ambassador Over Missile Strike

Date:

The Polish Foreign Ministry has summoned the Russian ambassador over today’s missiles falling into Polish territory, killing two civilians, the message reads:

On November 15, 2022, another massive shelling of the entire territory of Ukraine and its critical infrastructure, conducted by the armed forces of the Russian Federation, took place for many hours. At 15:40 in the village of Przewodów in the Hrubieszów poviat in the Lubelskie Voivodship, a Russian-made missile fell, killing two citizens of the Republic of Poland. In connection with this event, the Minister of Foreign Affairs, Prof. Zbigniew Rau summoned the ambassador of the Russian Federation to the Ministry of Foreign Affairs and demanded immediate detailed explanations.”

While this message does not accuse the Russian Federation of carrying out an attack on Polish territory, the determination that the missile was Russian-made and the summons of the Russian Ambassador does signal that the Polish government is taking steps to react to Russia if they are implicated.

Former Polish Defense Minister Macierewicz is leading the growing voices in Polish politics calling for the deployment of Polish troops in Western Ukraine. Wednesday morning NATO leaders are suspected to meet in which Poland will most likely ask for Article IV consultations.
